For the first time in history, a major national political party is embracing gay marriage.
Yesterday at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, party faithful adopted a measure that officially adds support for gay marriage to the party’s platform.
This decision means the Democratic Party officially condones and supports gay marriage – despite the overwhelming success of pro-marriage campaigns like ours around the country.
But there’s more. They did not stop at merely adding support for gay marriage to their platform. They’ve also adopted a provision that calls for completely overturning the 32 hard-fought state amendments around the nation that protect marriage as a union between one man and woman.
Not only do they support same-sex marriage, but they are willing to take steps to make it legal, like repealing the federal DOMA!
They cannot take no for an answer!
That the National Democratic Party would embrace gay marriage as a cornerstone of their party platform and threaten to overturn our hard-fought state amendments means our fight to protect marriage is not over.
It is now our job to defend the amendment we fought so hard to pass in May.
And it’s our job to make sure voters around North Carolina are educated on these issues, know where the national parties stand on marriage, whether candidates are willing to actually defend marriage, and are willing and ready to go to the polls to stand up for marriage on Election Day.
