expanding opportunities for abandoned babies to live

Surrendering a baby is an incredibly difficult decision. North Carolina’s safe surrender laws protect parents who hand their newborn to a qualified professional—but not those who use a baby box. We need to change that.

Baby boxes save lives. In December, a mother in Ohio safely surrendered her newborn in a baby box at a fire station, where first responders quickly found her. Stories like this are happening across the country—20 states allow baby boxes, and over 50 babies have been safely surrendered this way since 2016.

Baby boxes are safe and anonymous. Some parents in crisis can’t surrender their baby face-to-face. Baby boxes provide a secure, discreet alternative. Installed at fire stations, hospitals, and sheriff’s offices, they have alarm systems and 24/7 monitoring to ensure infants are retrieved quickly.

Our bill would extend legal protections to parents who use baby boxes and the first responders who receive surrendered infants, just like current law does for in-person surrender. With no state funding required, this is a simple, life-saving solution. Help us get it passed!
