Parents across the country are losing custody of their children for refusing to affirm gender transitions, threatening parental rights and religious freedom. In states like Indiana, Ohio, and California, courts have removed children from homes when parents rejected gender-affirming care. In North Carolina, social workers are instructed to assess whether parents are “maltreating” children by not affirming their gender identity, potentially leading to child removal.

To protect parental rights, the Parents Protection Act would prevent parents from losing custody or facing prosecution for refusing gender-affirming interventions. Gender-affirming treatments are unproven and carry significant risks, including psychological harm and serious physical issues like cancer and sterility. Many parents also oppose these treatments based on religious beliefs, and policies that target them could worsen the foster care crisis.

North Carolina must pass the Parents Protection Act to safeguard parents’ right to make decisions for their children without fear of government intervention.
