Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, North Carolina has ranked #1 in the nation for states with the largest percentage increase in abortions. Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion groups have openly sought to make NC the abortion capital of the South.
The result? Our state has already seen a 37% increase in abortions.
In the past, top NC Democrats have sponsored bills like the “Whole Woman’s Health Act,” which sought to remove most of the state’s protections for women and children on abortion. Like the efforts by Democrats and Governors in New York, Virginia, and Rhode Island, their past bill has allowed for physicians to perform abortions up to the point of birth. Current law in North Carolina allows abortions prior to 20 weeks if they are performed by a licensed physician.
After growing their majorities in the House and Senate—and after all their campaign promises to protect the unborn— it is now incumbent upon NC Republicans to seize the historical initiative and propose a brave solution that protects as many babies as possible. In our lead up to the upcoming legislative session, it is likely that these Republicans have been discussing what type of bill they believe accomplishes those ends. Some are advocating for a 13-week bill, while others like NC House Speaker Moore have been quoted across the media as favoring restrictions after a human heartbeat is detected. We wouldn’t be surprised if some even wished the issue would disappear entirely (but we won’t let that happen, now will we?).
The issue with a 13 week ban is this: given the historical opportunity before us, can we truly say we are attempting to save as many babies as possible when a 13 week ban only saves 13% of those aborted in NC? In contrast, a heartbeat protection saves the lives of 86% of babies currently being aborted. Anyone familiar with pregnancy knows that a human heartbeat heard on an ultrasound/sonogram means “congratulations, it’s a baby human!”
At 13 weeks, babies are aborted by dismemberment. There’s even evidence they have the ability to feel pain at that age. With a 37% increase in abortions in our state since Roe v. Wade was overturned, NC has become the destination for abortion in the southeast. If we don’t act this year with a heartbeat protection, we will maintain our status as the abortion destination with an increase of up to 70,000 more unborn babies being killed.
