STATUS: Passed by the NC House on 4/16/2025. Awaiting action by the NC Senate.
Pornographic content is never appropriate in an educational setting. Exposure to sexually explicit material is devastating and traumatic for children, and it can have lasting psychological effects. This bill would put in place common-sense criteria to protect our children and ensure that the materials we provide them are appropriate for their developmental stage. Our schools should be places that nurture the development of young minds, not expose them to harmful material that robs them of their innocence.
HB 636 protects students in public schools by requiring that school library books and materials meet set criteria, including supports and enriches the student’s personal learning, is appropriate for the age, grade level, intellectual development, and ability level of the students, does not contain material that is harmful to minors (any material or performance that depicts or describes sexual activity or is pervasively vulgar). It ensures children are not exposed to sexually explicit content under the guise of education.
