SB20 was a significant victory for life in North Carolina, but we need stronger measures to further protect pregnant women and unborn babies. To prevent the illegal distribution of abortion pills, we must crack down on the 2,000 monthly shipments flooding the state. We also need to require informed consent for abortions, ensuring women are fully informed about all risks and their options, including abortion reversal pills. It is critical to mandate reporting for abortions sought due to rape or incest, as men who commit these crimes should be held accountable. Additionally, judicial bypass for minors seeking an abortion must be removed, ensuring that parents are included in the decision-making process for their child’s medical care.

To protect the unborn, we should limit abortions to six weeks. Limiting abortion to six weeks respects the belief that life begins at conception and takes an incremental approach to ending abortion. We must also remove the life-limiting anomaly exception, as doctors can make mistakes with prenatal diagnoses, and no life should be terminated based on uncertain predictions. Further, abortion drugs should be prohibited from being distributed on state or school property, ensuring that no state institution is involved in ending innocent lives. Finally, we must ban the purchase of the remains of unborn babies, protecting them from being treated as part of a profit-driven scheme.

Strengthening these measures will ensure the protection of both vulnerable women and unborn babies, reaffirming the right to life in North Carolina.
