RFK JR. SAYS BIDEN TWISTED ABORTION PILL SAFETY DATA, PROMISES INVESTIGATION
US Health Secretary RFK Jr. said Thursday in a Senate committee hearing that the FDA is actively reviewing the safety data for the abortion drug mifepristone. He testified that the agency has new data on adverse events, and he also said that the Biden administration “twisted the data” to make the drug appear safer than it is.
“The Biden administration and the abortion industry have endangered women with false claims about the safety of mifepristone. Thankfully, US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy values the health and lives of American women enough to take an honest look at the data,” said NC Values Coalition Executive Director Tami Fitzgerald. “We are confident that the FDA’s review will be consistent with recent findings that the adverse event rate is close to 22 times higher than previously reported.”
Back in May, RFK Jr. directed the FDA to complete a review on the safety of mifepristone. This came after a study revealed that the adverse events are 22 times higher than the FDA claims. RFK Jr. indicated that the FDA label should be changed.
This review comes at a time of increasing alarm about the unchecked shipment of abortion drugs into states which prohibit or restrict abortion. According to a 2023 Guardian article, there are over 2000 shipments of abortion pills coming into North Carolina each month. These shipments ignore safety restrictions in North Carolina law and, possibly, include pills not approved by the FDA. Additionally, there are an increasing number of reports of abortion pills ordered online being used to poison pregnant women.
In the upcoming year, North Carolina legislators need to consider HB553, “Ensuring Patient Safety with Mail Order Meds,” sponsored by Rep. Jackson, Campbell Potts and Balkcom to stop this threat to the health and safety of women.
