NC VALUES STATEMENT ON NC BUDGET
“We congratulate members of the General Assembly for passing a state budget with bipartisan support that meets critical needs and provides resources. But one thing remains undone — Protecting Our Daughters in private sex-designated spaces. Girls across our State are being threatened, ogled, and peeped at in women’s bathrooms, locker rooms, dorm rooms, juvenile detention centers, prisons, jails, women’s shelters, and rape crisis centers. There are rumors of a rape occurring in a women’s bathroom. Without a state law defining these spaces to be private based on sex, our daughters are at risk. Sixty-two percent of the public agree that girls deserve privacy and safety in private spaces. And this week’s monumental decision by the US Supreme Court in West Virginia v. BPJ has provided the framework for Protecting Our Daughters in private spaces. The next step from the Court’s ruling that states may prohibit boys from competing in girls’ sports, is allowing states to protect girls in private spaces. We are expectant that lawmakers will join the twenty-two other states who have already Protected Our Daughters in private spaces, now that the Supreme Court has paved the way.”
