The start of this week marks the kickoff of the annual National School Choice Week, a period running from Jan. 26 to Feb. 1 that celebrates school choice across our state and country.
When it comes to school choice, North Carolina has a lot to celebrate.
First, there is a variety of school choice options available for many of the 2.3 million children living in North Carolina. Families in NC can choose from traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online academies, and homeschooling.
As A.P. Dillon notes in this great article about North Carolina and school choice, our state offers a wide selection of education options besides public schools:
“For the 2023-24 school year, there were 881 private schools operating that served approximately 131,230 students in North Carolina. There were 210 public charter schools operating during that same year with enrollment across those schools exceeding 145,000 students. Additionally, 157,642 students were engaged in homeschooling, which has seen a steady increase in North Carolina following the COVID-19 pandemic.”
