NC VALUES URGES COURT TO OVERTURN DECISION ALLOWING STATE FUNDING FOR TRANSGENDER REASSIGNMENT MEDICAL SERVICES

RALEIGH, N.C. – Oral arguments were heard yesterday in Kadel v. Folwell, a case challenging North Carolina government health coverage, funding transgender medical services. The U.S. Court of Appeals Fourth Circuit is considering an appeal by State Treasurer Dale Folwell to overturn a decision by a federal judge which forces taxpayers to fund gender dysphoria treatments including sex changes for state employees. Folwell says these treatments are elective and raise the costs of healthcare for state employees.

Executive Director of NC Values Coalition Tami Fitzgearld voiced support for Folwell’s challenge to the decision.

“Taxpayers should not be forced to fund elective sex changes and hormone therapy which often result in emotional devastation and regret after healthy body parts are amputated, and permanent damage is done. In doing so, we are also enabling the culture’s dangerous narrative that gender is fluid, and that medical procedures can actually change someone’s gender,” said Fitzgerald. “These procedures not only damage the gender confused, but also open the state up to liability for genital mutilation and emotional distress, which often cause long-term medical problems.”

An increasing number of people who have undergone hormone treatments and transitioning surgery are publicly regretting their transitions, like Walt Heyer who lives in North Carolina. Said Fitzgerald, “The State should not be a participant and enabler of permanent genital mutilation and emotional distress.”

Robinson narrowly leads Stein, DeSantis over Biden & Trump
NC Voters Choose Heartbeat Law Over Radical Abortion Platform of Democratic Party and Gubernatorial Candidate Josh Stein

RALEIGH, N.C. – New polling conducted by Differentiator Data for NC Values Coalition and NC Faith & Freedom Coalition shows early leaders for Governor Ron DeSantis over former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden, and a narrow lead for Lt. Governor Mark Robinson over Attorney General Josh Stein, if Robinson enters the race for Governor. The poll surveyed 500 registered voters statewide from January 9-12, 2023, and has a margin of error of 4.5 percent.

In the first poll since Stein announced his candidacy for governor of North Carolina, likely gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson narrowly leads 42.4 percent over Stein’s 41.6 percent with likely general election voters.

After two years of Joe Biden, Republican primary voters want a winner: DeSantis led the field at 47.4 percent, with a 12.7 percent margin over Trump. Only 35 percent of primary voters think Trump should be the nominee while 56.8 percent think someone else has a better chance.

General election voters favor DeSantis over Biden by 5 percent. Trump, who lost to Biden by 1.3 percent in 2020, is now trailing Biden by 3.8 percent early in the 2024 race.

As the North Carolina General Assembly begins their session on Wednesday, the poll also found that by a margin of 14 percent, voters preferred legislation to protect unborn children once a heartbeat can be detected, with exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother, over Stein’s policy of abortion up until birth. Josh Stein has repeatedly stated he does not support a limit on abortion, standing against the state’s current law limiting abortions at 20 weeks gestation.

Jason Williams, Executive Director for NC Faith and Freedom Coalition, also stated:

“It’s clear that when given the choice between heartbeat protections and abortion on demand up to birth, the voters choose to protect life when an unborn baby’s heartbeat can be detected. Almost 80% of likely Robinson voters support early heartbeat protections for that unborn baby while only 45% of likely pro-choice Stein voters agree with the Democratic Party—and Josh Stein’s—extreme position on abortion on demand, up to birth.”

Tami Fitzgerald, Executive Director of the NC Values, welcomed the new polling and voiced her support for heartbeat protections:

“Josh Stein will keep the abortion industry as a priority if elected governor. North Carolina has already seen the biggest increase in abortions in the nation at 37 percent, and Stein will continue to make our state a top destination for abortion. Contrast that to Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson’s unwavering support for the unborn. We urge any future candidates for governor to take note that North Carolinians believe in protecting pre-born babies when their hearts begin beating, over the extreme position of Josh Stein and the radical abortion movement.”

More than a dozen states have already enacted pro-life protections since the Dobbs Supreme Court decision, with the potential to save over 125,000 lives annually. NC VALUES SHOWS SUPPORT FOR LAWSUIT CHALLENGING POLITICALLY MOTIVATED TERMINATION AT NC GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL

Executive Director of NC Values Coalition Tami Fitzgerald made a statement today supporting the Alliance for Defending Freedom lawsuit on behalf of Dr. David Phillips, a well-respected English professor who has spent eight summers teaching at the Governor’s School, a residential summer program for North Carolina’s most talented rising high-school seniors.

“According to the Alliance Defending Freedom, Dr. Phillips was terminated after presenting three voluntary seminars ‘critiquing critical theory and the increasing bias and lack of viewpoint diversity in higher education.’ Critical theory, an ideology that views everyone and everything through the lens of characteristics like race, sex, and religion, labels people as perpetual oppressors or victims based on group membership alone. Dr. Phillips was fired mid-semester without explanation. Although Dr. Phillips was a long-time, well-respected professor at the North Carolina Governor’s School, he was wrongfully terminated after expressing his viewpoint about Critical Race Theory. Our taxpayer funded educational institutions should be teaching students how to think critically and promoting a diversity of viewpoints, instead of censoring ideas competing with far-left ideology. I strongly support ADF’s challenge to Dr. Phillips’ termination and hope justice is served for Dr. Phillips. If proven correct, the school should be brought to task not only for teaching Critical Race Theory but for also punishing those who challenge it.”

Case Name: Phillips v. North Carolina Department of Public Instruction
